"On Sunday last a number of local gentleman met at the "Knockage" in connection with formation of this new club and inspected the proposed links. It was resolved, at a meeting held subsequently Mr. Berkeley D. Wise, C. E., in the chair, to form the above club provided satisfactory arrangements can be made with the holders of the land"The Sportsman's Holiday Guide; 1896 reads "The Greenisland club has its links close to Greenisland station.

The putting greens mostly artificial, have been laid with seaside turf. There is an excellent clubhouse. The course, which consists of nine holes, commands fine views."Mr. Alex Day, the professional at the Royal Belfast Golf Club, laid out the nine-hole course and he brought the material for the construction of the greens all the way from Magilligan Strand, by rail, free of charge to the club.The first President was Colonel McCalmont C. B. It had a membership of 168, in 1896, and the club had 120 lady members by 1897.
