Course Description:
Mullingar Golf Club moved to its present location in 1937. The legendary James Braid designed this demanding 18-hole par 72 Championship course. It is set in a beautiful parkland location, with a fantastic variety of very old oak, beech and various other indigenous trees to this area of the country. In recent years all bunkers have been enlarged and some new strategically placed ones added. Also, the 11th and 17th have, been extended, with new tee boxes. The 2nd is probably the most famous, in that it was once, regarded by the great Christy O’Connor "Himself" as the best inland par 3 in Ireland.
The new Clubhouse is a very spacious and modern open plan building. Full catering facilities are available at all times. Mullingar is not just, a fine golf course the friendly and hospitable atmosphere is felt the moment you arrive and remains long after you have left this haven of sheer joy and tranquillity. Mullingar is the venue of the Mullingar Scratch Cup, one of Irelands premier Championships and the All-Ireland Father and Son competition.
Voted the No. 33-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. Mullingar was voted No. 20 Parkland/Inland Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland.

Club History
Instituted 1894 ,affiliated 1895. Mullingar was, opened on the 4th April 1895, by Lord Greville, the then President. It was first known as the Westmeath Golf Club. An account given in the "Sportsmans Holiday Guide", 1897 records "A nice nine-hole course on the Gaybrook Racecourse about a mile from town. The course commands fine views of Lakes Owel and Ennel, the distance round is about a mile and a half".An account in the "Irish Times" 30th April 1990, records a match at the new course at Mount Prospect, the property of Mr. Killian.
It would appear this was the club's home until 1909 when a new course was, laid out at Lynn, the property of Mr. J. T. Roche, by Mr. W. C. Pickeman, the professional at Portmarnock Golf Club. There were sixty male members and twenty lady members.The club then moved to a very picturesque site on the shores of Lough Owel, the lands of Mr. Peter Gaynor, in 1919. Future expansion of this course was restricted by the presence of the Midland & Great Western Railway.Mr. J. R. Downes, the Captain in 1935, and a hard-working committee located lands at Belvedere, the property of Col. Howard Bury that was suitable for an eighteen-hole course. James Braid was, retained by the club as course architect and a new course, as we know it today, was opened in 1937. The course is the home of the Mullingar Scratch Cup every August, in which most of our top golfers take part.
Location
As you come through Mullingar on the Dublin side, take a left in the middle of the town and follow the road. The course is approximately three miles outside the town.
Members Achievements
Mullingar Golf Club won the Leinster Final of the Barton Shield in 2006 when they beat The Island by 6-holes at The Island Golf Club on 5th August.It was on to Enniscrone Golf Club for the National Finals, where they where drawn against Munster Champions Limerick Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Wednesday 13th September.
First on the tee were Des Morgan with Patrick Higgins against Michael O’Kelly and Dermot Morris, the Limerick pair gained a 5-hole lead. They were followed by John Morris with Colin Cunningham against Pat Murray with Mick Kemmy, they won their match by 2-holes, but it was not enough to prevent the Munster Champions going through to the All-Ireland Final against Co. Sligo the eventual winners.
Mullingar Golf Club won the All-Ireland Seniors Jimmy Carroll Cup in 2005, when the team was, Seamus Berry, Seamus Casey, John Cunningham, Pat Curran, Albert Lee, John Maher, Tom Mulvee, Tim O'Sullivan, Matt Talbot, Brendan Timlin and they were captained by Brian Reilly.
They won the Central Towns in 2005, when the team was, Seamus Berry, Pat Curran, Pat Dromey, Alan Moran, Tom Mulvee, David Smith, Matt Talbot, Eddie Tynan, Richard Whelehan, they were captained by Tom Kavanagh.
Mullingar Golf Club won the Tudenham Cup in 2005, when the team was, Stephen Bray, Greg Cleary, Paddy Dunne, Brendan Flynn, John Geoghegan, Peter Keegan, John C. Kelly, John Lynch, Brendan McDonnell, Alan Moran, Gerry Mulligan, Kevin Mulvee, Derek Plunkett, Frank Rooney, Aidan Tompkins and Alan Warde, they were captained by John Keane.
The Ladies of Mullingar Golf Club were Regional winners in the ILGU All-Ireland Ladies Fourball Championship in 2005, when the team was, Lucy Tormey, Bernie Kelly, Fiona Burke, Lily Gilleran, Eilish McCormack, Una Stephens, Patience Collier, Ann-Marie Fagan, Geraldine Bell, Dorothy O'Keeffe and Joanne Killian, they were captained by Cathy Smith.
John Morris was selected on the Munster team for the Interprovincial Matches played at Portmarnock Golf Club from 11th to 13th August 2004.

The Ladies of Mullingar Golf Club were District Champions in the Ulster Bank All-Ireland Ladies Fourball Championship in 2003, when the team was, Julie Delahunty-Moore, Dorothy O'Keeffe, Helen Collier, Geraldine Walshe, Mary McCauley, Fiona Burke, Siobhan O'Donnell-Murphy, they were captained by Brenda Conlon.
Mullingar Golf Club won the Leinster Final of the Barton Shield at Luttrellstown Golf Club when they beat Birr in the 2002 Final. The team was V. F. Cunningham, James Quinlivan, Mervyn Cunningham, Patrick Higgins, John Morris and Peter Wallace. They were, captained by Aidan Tomkins. They were drawn against Clandeboye in the All-Ireland Semi-Finals at Galway Golf Club on September 5th. They lost out to the Ulster Champions by 5-holes, the team on the day was Peter Wallace with Des Morgan and Colin Cunningham with John Morris.
L. O'Donovan qualified for the National Finals of the Irish times-Mitsubishi Motors Women's Masters. She returned 33 points in the semi-final at Glasson Golf Hotel & Country Club on the 23rd of August 2001. Then it was on to Galway Bay Golf & Country Club for the Final on 13th September.
Mary Hamill who won the Millennium Captain's Prize to the Ladies, received an International award for her success in the face of adversity-and helped raise over $500,000 for research and treatment of Parkinson's disease. She received the "Buddy" award in McLean, Virginia, USA in May 2001.
Mullingar Golf Club won the All-Ireland Irish Junior Cup at Co. Sligo in 1982, when the squad was John Keane, Murty Quinn, Ger Mulligan, Tom Shaw, John Wallace, Peter Keegan, Mickey Bagnall, Brendan Timlin and Jimmy Rickard. They were, captained by Tom O'Mahony.
They won the Barton Cup in 1960, when the squad was J. Lynch, M. J. Duffy, T. D. Shaw, M. McKeogh, P. J. McCartan, P. Hope, D. Feeney, L. M. Galvin, R. J. Downes and J. F. Healy.
They won The Leinster Junior Cup in 1961 with D. Solon, S. O. Catain, R. J. Downes, J. A. O'Connor and P. J. McCartan.
They won the Leinster Irish Mixed Foursomes in 1992, with C. Garry, P. Collier, T. Dighan, V. Noran, D. Bell, L. Gilleran, G. Purcell, J. McDonnell, C. Cunningham, U. Stephens, D. McLoughlin, M. Fay, P. Keegan, A. Daly and M. J. Smith was captain.
They won the Provincial Towns Cup in 1989, when the squad was D. Bell, C. Connaughton, P. Eighan, C. Garry, F. Garry, A. Geraghty, J. Ryan, P. Taaffe, M. Talbot, T. Timmons, T. Upton and they were, captained by T. Rickard.
They won the Newsam Cup in 1988, 1989 and 1995.
Albert Lee was elected Chairman of the Leinster Branch of the GUI for 2001.
Joey Purcell participated in the Home International matches in 1973.
Michael O'Grady won the Druid's Glen-Irish Independent Golfer of the Month, in June 1999. He received a beautiful limited-edition painting and a Fourball. Michael has won the World One Arm Championship on two occasions playing off 10.5. He reached his 7th final in June.
Roger Healy played Leinster Boys' in 1998.
Lucy Tormey played for the Irish Girls' in 1984.
