Course Description:

Nine hole links course beside Spanish Point beach. Course is situated 2 miles south of Milltown Malbay on the Ferry Road. It is half way between Lahinch Course and the new Greg Norman Course at Doonbeg. The course consists of five par fours and four par threes. Because of its location there is always wind to consider, particularly on the 8th/17th and 9th/18th which are par-threes members have been known to fail to reach the 18th with a ‘driver’. Six of the greens are elevated and the finishing holes command a perfect view of the sea and strand. The Club celebrated its centenary in 1996 and in the last four years has gone from strength to strength with its membership doubled and the number of visitors, particularly foreigners, increased also.

Club History

Instituted 1896 affiliated 1915. There is some confusion as to when golf was first played at Milltown Malbay, The "Golfers Guide" 1897, records the club as being " West Clare Golf Club" and "This is a nine-hole course, finely situated on the shores of Malbay. Hazards are hills, sandpits and bents. It is free to visitors staying at the Atlantic Hotel". An entrance fee of two shillings and six pence with a similar annual subscription is listed. Like so many other clubs, the early records are missing and the club credits its foundation to Robert B. Barclay and Capt. Ernest Ellis, in 1912. However, it would appear golf was played here prior to 1912.
